Kayaking the Colorado River from Marble Canyon
Most visitors see Horseshoe Bend from the overlook above. But the best view? From the water.
Kayaking the Colorado River through Glen Canyon is one of the most unique ways to experience Marble Canyon. This stretch of river between Glen Canyon Dam and Lees Ferry is calm, flat water with no rapids, making it accessible for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. The crystal-clear water, towering red cliffs, and total stillness make it feel like you've paddled into another world.
How It Works
Our preferred partner, Kayak the Colorado, offers backhaul service, which means a boat takes you and your kayak upriver, and you paddle back down at your own pace. Your captain will point out landmarks along the way, so you’ll know the best places to stop on the way back down.
You can choose a half-day trip (about 10 miles starting from Petroglyph Beach, just above Horseshoe Bend) or a full-day adventure (14 miles starting from Kayak Beach near Glen Canyon Dam). Rentals are available if you don't have your own gear, including single and tandem kayaks, paddleboards, and all the accessories you need.
What You'll See
Towering canyon walls that rise over 1,000 feet, ancient petroglyphs left by Ancestral Puebloans, lush hanging gardens clinging to the cliffs, and wildlife like bighorn sheep, herons, egrets, and California Condors soaring overhead. You'll paddle right through Horseshoe Bend, seeing the iconic landmark from a perspective most visitors never experience. The silence is incredible. Just the sound of your paddle, the occasional bird call, and the river flowing beneath you.
Tips for Your Trip
Book your backhaul in advance, especially during busy season. Spring and fall are the most popular times, but summer works too if you get an early start. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and snacks. Mornings are best since afternoon winds can pick up and make paddling more difficult. Wear shoes that can get wet, and consider bringing a dry bag for your phone and valuables.
Where to Stay
Marble Canyon Lodge is just minutes from the Lees Ferry boat launch, making it the perfect basecamp for your kayaking adventure. Wake up, grab coffee, and be on the water before the day heats up. Order a to-go lunch from the Lonely JackRabbit before you head out, and come back to the Fireside Menu for s'mores and cocktails under the stars when you're done. There's no better way to end a day on the river.
